Staying Pure (Payton Skky Series, 1)

"Staying Pure"
I love the entire Payton Skky Series! I found it by mistake, but I know God placed it in my life for a reason. A lot of what Payton has gone through has helped my life. I'm on book 4 now, and I can't put it down. I can't wait to read book 5 and I hope there will be more to the series! I have recommended this book to others and they have had the same great results in their lives after reading these books. Thanks Stephanie Perry Moore for following God's call to publish these books, they are truely a blessing in my life! Keep up the good work.
Jeremiah 29:11

Exciting, Entertaining and Life Transforming!
As the founder and editor in chief of ..............................I was so very anxious to read Stephanie's novels as so many people were talking about them. I began reading Sober Faith and Staying Pure and two days later I had completed them both sad that the story had ended. Sober Faith and Staying Pure individually and collectively, accuarately potray the the experiences, thoughts and feelings of teens trying to find themselves and fit into a society that is filled with peer pressure. This book was so delightful and enjoyable to read that I could not put it down and I am an adult! I plan to purchase several copies to pass out for Christmas gifts so that all the young people that I know can have the same wonderful experience. Payton Skyy, Rain, Dakari, Tad, and Lynzi experience the challenges and plights like real young people. However, by reading these books you see that doing the right thing always pays off. Especially when God is the head of your life. It is never too early to develop and maintain a relationship with Jesus Christ and Stephanie Perry Moore certainly makes the way brighter and easier knowing that you are not experiencing teen problems alone. Happy reading!!

very good book! I couldn't put it down!
I saw a Laurel Shadrach book in the store near the college I go to, and decided to get it. I couldn't put it down--it was that good! I found the second in the series--and couldn't put it down either! Then I found out that Stephanie Perry Moore also writes the Payton Skky Series. When my Christian bookstore got the books in, I was thrilled. I picked up "Staying Pure" and found that I could relate to it. Payton is a very good role model. And even though I am in college, I foud her story very good--even though I had to squeeze time in for it. Payton Skky is an African American high school senior who is soon to be a debutante. In the meantime, her boyfriend leaves her for someone who will give him what he wants--sex. Then Payton's friends all have run ins with guys all their own, and there are many more quarrels. While I have never been in a dating relationship like Payton's, I have had the same friends and classmates being jealous thing going on, and could totally relate to her there. I liked how Stephanie Perry Moore had Payton do the Christian thing when it came to forgiving all the people in her life who had done really bad things to her--even forgiving the girl who stole her boyfriend! Payton is a really good character and her stories are really really good--to the point where you will not be able to put them down! I also recommend the Laurel Shadrach Series by the same author.

Can-Do Cancun Map
This map, along with the others they publish, is the one thing you must have before travelling to Cancun. It will make your trip so much more enjoyable, because you will never be lost.

Wonderfully researched, easy to read map of Cancun.
If you've ever gone to a strange city and tried to find your way around, you know how frustrating it can be. With this map, you can fly into Cancun International Airport and know where your hotel is right off the bat, from having studied at home before leaving. You'll know where the restaurants are, too, leaving more time to enjoy your vacation and less time spent trying to find your way around. There is info on taxi zones and costs, local bus info, even shows a bike path along the hotel zone. I've been to Cancun several times, and still use the map to find places. Its not an American Express Card, but don't leave home without this map, either.

I wouldn't go to Cancun without it!
This is my BIBLE when I go to Cancun. So much care and detail has gone into this map. I learn and find new things all the time using it. It is VERY easy to use and read. If there is one reference you buy before your trip - this should be the one!!!

You Are Not Your Own: Living Loud for God
Published in Hardcover by Broadman & Holman Publishers (March, 2002)
Authors: Jason Perry and Steve Keels
Average review score:

jason perry's "you are not your own"
Ok i'll admit it right now... guilty as charged... i'm a big plus one fan. At first it was cuz of looks but that's changed alot in the past few months. when i read Jason's book i was amazed... he's so open in the book. he tells things that if it were me i'd be kinda afraid to share with people. Jason isn't amazing because he's cute or he has a good voice or because he wrote a book, Jason is who he is because God made him that way. God has used Jason, and the guys of Plus One in my life through their music. I would definately recommend Jason's book to any teen(or even adult probably). I know this is a "you are not your own" review... but while i'm at it i'd also recommend and of plus one's cd's. The Promise, Obvious, or even their new one that's about to come out... Christmas...

How could I choose less than 5 stars?
Let me admit it right off, I'm a fifteen year old girl who's a Plus ONE fan and Jason is probably my favorite member. Does it surprise you that I'm interested in this book? When I first started reading it, I noticed right away that Jason had help, and some techniques of a more experienced author stood out against words that I knew were his. He said himself: "I don't even like to read, how can I write a book?" So why did he write a book? It wasn't because he had a passion for writing or wanted to create a #1 best selling huge moneymaker. He wrote it anyway because he had something to say and he knew God wanted him to say it. I'm sure a lot of girls picked up the book because they liked the guy on the cover. But as they read I'm sure they found out this isn't about Jason Perry, it's about God and what He's done in J's life. I found it very inspiring. If Jason could live his life like he was totally in love with God, why couldn't I? It struck me that my parents would like this book. He said some of the exact same things they've been having a difficult time trying to convince me of, but as soon as I heard it from him, I immediately accepted it. It's nice to hear Godly advice from someone who's older, more mature and experienced, but who is close enough to our age to still deal with the same issues we are. As I read on, I found out that Jason has some great thoughts on the benefits of purity, the fulfillment caused by giving everything to God, the value of Bible memory, making good choices about what kind of music to listen to, and what kind of friends to hang out with, and how to act towards the Plus ONE guys if you ever meet them. What I've learned from Jason has greatly affected some of my decisions; few people that I've never met have influenced me so much. If you're a teen and you want a book that will help you deepen your relationship with God, here you go, and if you're already a Jason appreciator it will feel like you're getting council from a good friend. Now, what don't I like about this book? Can I find something, or am I too biased as a fan to admit that even the Plus-Oners can make mistakes? Let me think, Jason does his job by including info about what it's like to be in the band, he includes lots of Bible verses, the content and sincerity are admirable and he doesn't make his story too long or boring. Maybe I would complain that his face being on the cover is to self-promoting, but that's how people recognize him anyway. Don't all previously famous book writers do that? Finale verdict: No complaints, only compliments, to the author of "You are not Your Own."

Kristy Webb Age:25
This book "You are not your own, live out loud for God" is absolutely awesome. I love Plus One, and when I seen on here that Jason Perry had wrote a book I had to buy it and see what it was like. I love to read. In the past I have read things about praise and worship and about prayer and I always get inspired when I read those books but when I read this book I was just as inspired. If you are a youth pastor or a youth, you both will definetly love this book. Jason is so open in this book and tells things about his life that alot of teenages go through. My sister and her husband are youth pastors at the church that I go to and I'm starting to take over discipleship now and I've already decided that this is the first book that we are going to read. Jason tells about in this book when he was going through his rebellious stage and the terrible mistakes he made and then shows you how he repented and now how his life is and how on fire for God he is. I'm getting ready to buy 5 more of these books right now. All I can say is if you buy this book you won't be sorry.

Advanced C Programming by Example
Published in Paperback by PWS Publishing Co. (14 January, 1998)
Author: John Perry
Average review score:

Great book
If you're looking for a concise and throughout book in C programming. Don't look further!
I wouldn't recommend it for beginners though (as the title says it's for advanced programmers)! If you're beginner I'd recommend to start with C in 21 days from Sams publishing or similar book.

A fantastic and difficult book on C
I own hundreds of programming texts and this is by far one of my very favorites, and my absolute favorite book on C.

This book tackles the tougher issues of C programming in great detail, with concise and self-contained examples you can type in directly, compile and run (many books only provide code sections, not entire programs).

Each chapter includes quiz questions that are just difficult enough to challenge the reader, but not so difficult that you will skip over them. I found the quizes to be very useful.

This book is pleasantly slim (although dense). Does anyone really read those 800 page books? I don't. This book will take you a long time, as the content is dense, but you can actually read the whole book and get a sense of completion.

I also enjoyed the author's commentary on C and other programming languages.

I'm really amazed that more people do not own this book.

A must-have book!
I've got a few C-programming books, but this is the one that I love best of all. It is a gem of a book that resonates with simple, crystal-clear explanations on topics so seemingly difficult to understand in the classic book by Kernighan and Ritchie. I would recommend using these two books together.

What makes this book even more entertaining and readable is that Perry is not afraid to lay on his idiosyncrasies regarding the practice of programming. There is a little hiccup, though, when he recommends the use of gets() and sscanf() together for nearly all input of strings from the terminal: gets() is widely known to be inferior to fgets(), and sscanf() is not discussed in the book at all!

But all in all, a book that deserves full marks.

The Beatles Records on Vee-Jay

BEATLES ON VEE-JAY - AN AMAZINGLY AUTHORATIVE WORK
I received my copy of this book a couple of days ago with the similar Apple book (see my seperate review of that one). I bought it on the strength on the Author's similar Capitol volumes and boy it's amazing how much research this guy puts into his work. The Vee-Jay story was pretty much an unknown quantity to us Aussies so it's all the more fascinating to read the twists and turns of Vee-Jay's involvement in Beatlemania back in 1963-64. The chapters are mind-boggling to read. All 4 Capitol & Others vs Vee Jay legal cases are thoroughly detailed though I have skimmed through these because it's just so much to take in. The chapter on "Introducing The Beatles" was my main interest because I have a copy of the Mono Version #1 LP which I bought in an Auction here over 10 years ago. I have verified that it's the real deal thanks to this book + Perry Cox's "Beatles Price Guide". No, it's not for sale either!! The label representations and pictures of old original 45's are amazing and enough to drool over. I can't add much more than my colleague reviewers here other than you must have this and the Author's other books (On Capitol #1 & 2 & On Apple) if you're a serious Beatle nut like me. Even if you're not it's a wonderful addition to any Rock Music book library.

Beatles on Vee-Jay is a miracle!
This is a definitive Beatles book. I am so thankful for Mr. Bruce Spizer for coming up with such an excellent source of material, and handily placing it together into one magnificent hard-bound volume. The full-color illustrations are out-of-this-world! I never knew that so many different label and jacket variations ever existed before this. The very day that i purchased this book, I also purchased what I consider to be THE ultimate companion album; an imported CD by The Beatles, entitled "The V-J Story", which contains ALL sixteen original Beatles songs first issued on the V-J label. The good news is that ALL sixteen songs are in beautiful stereophonic sound (with the exceptions of "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You", which are only monophonic recordings electronically reprocessed into "fake" stereo). Nonetheless, this CD makes a perfect companion to Mr. Spizer's book. By all means, get this disc if you ever come across it.

TWO THUMBS UP AND A RESOUNDING YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!
This book is the best friend of anybody who is seriously interested in the Beatles' records on VeeJay. Even the most well informed fan will come away with tidbits of fresh information. The writing is sharp, clear and well organized and the work itself is nonpareil.

All in all, an excellent job. This one is a keeper. It gets two thumbs up, loud cheering and a hearty yeah, yeah, yeah!

Great VB Reference!
I am fairly new to Visual Basic Programming, and was looking for a good introductory book. I found it! This book covers just about everything you'd want to know about the foundations of VB5, every event & object. GREAT BOOK!

This book is not really a tutorial. I thought it was meant more as a source of reference, but I sure learned a heck of alot.

It is the best book for novice VB5 programmer
I learned VB for the past two years and had acquired for more than 10 books for introductory of VB. It is the best book that I have ever read for novice VB programmer. I highly recommended it to all person who are interested in Visual Basic.

Fantastic book to start with!!!
I took a VB class this year and this was the book that my teacher had recommended. During the class, we had to use a crappy book called "VB made easy". I read the whole book and still didnt know didly about VB. Then I bought this book!!! If you want a book that teaches you hard concepts of PROGRAMMING, and doesnt hold your hand through step by step projects that dont teach you how to think on your own...buy this book!!! I actually thought it deserved a 4.5 since a couple chapters could have been improved. But what book can teach you everything perfectly? So I curved it up comparing it to all the others i seen. Cause it sure came close. Now I do mostly programming at work with what i learned from this book. My next one will be "Profession VB 5.0 business objects" Check out the reviews on that one!!!

The Butcher's Boy
Published in Hardcover by Scribner (May, 1982)
Author: Thomas Perry
Average review score:

A mile stone of new era of Thriller.A MUST READ!
This is one of the greatest books I've ever read in the last twenty years! Find it anyway you could and after finished it, try to find the sequal SLEEPING DOGS, kill both with one shot, please! This book almost became a bible to modern day thriller writers and it's plots and scenario had been sneakly if not consciously copied by many recent writers such J. Finder(the Zero Hour) and B. Branon(Devils hole). Thomas Perry is one of the great treasures in American literature(although I don't like this serious word). Mr. Perry is a most talented but sometimes with weird writing directions. If you enjoyed his BUTCHER'S BOY/SLEEPING DOGS, then please try to read his new DISAPPEARING ACT series, you will be so happy to find a great writer who obviously never lost his MUSE to find a different Hero or Heroine to entertain himself and us. A MUST READ ALL WRITER!

Perry's first, and best
I read this book in one sitting, something I've haven't done since. It always amazed me that a movie hasn't been made out out this great story line: Hit-man on the run, young female FBI agent and Mafia hit-men on his trail. What fascinated me was the detailed picture that Perry paints on the need of a person in a business such as the 'Butcher's Boy' to blend into the background and, by all means, not get noticed. He's carried this on somewhat in his later books, which are all very good, but this is, I believe, his masterpiece.

The book is a Killer-Thriller
Thomas Perry's first novel is a Killer-Thriller! I had read "Sleeping Dogs"(the sequal) before I read "The Butchers Boy". Both books are great. I am glad they re-printed "The Butchers Boy" because it explains a lot I missed when reading
"Sleeping Dogs". However, each book can stand alone without the other. The "Butchers Boy" is about a hitman that is double crossed by the mob after he completed some contract(killing) work for them. It also tells the story of the Department of Justice Field Agent that is trying to tie all the killings together. It is a race to the end to find the missing link that will tie the knot to this killer-thriller. Also don't miss the few chapters that introduces us to the much loved "jane whitefield series" the lady that can make you disappear. I hope Perry brings that series back-it was one of his best. "Butchers Boy is a good read!

A Hero Among Heroes: Jimmie Dyess and the 4th Marine Division
Published in Paperback by Marine Corps Association (01 October, 1998)
Author: Perry M. Smith
Average review score:

An interesting portrait of a truly heroic person.
Only one individual in our nation's history has been awarded the Medal of Honor and the Carnegie Medal, Jimmie Dyess. This book is about his life, and would be of interest to anyone who wonders why seemingly ordinary people perform incredible acts of bravery when the situation demands it. Perry Smith does an excellent job of putting the times of Jimmie Dyess into perspective, for example what Augusta, Georgia was like during the early years of this century. Major General Smith's detailed descriptions of the spirit of the times during Mr. Dyess's life help the reader to better understand what makes this individual unique. The book will also appeal to those interested in leadership issues, and the personality traits of those who develop themselves as leaders. Had Mr. Dyess survived World War II, one wonders how his life would have turned out. Clearly, he was an exceptional individual, and there is much to be learned from this story of his life.

Anatomy of a Hero
Hero is a term used all too casually in our contemporary American society. Sports figures, entertainers, and political leaders are often referred to as 'heroes,' in the popular media. However, the title of 'hero' is earned only by an exceptional display of courage and often is accompanied by great personal sacrifice. Perry Smith delivers a powerful story of why Jimmie Dyess should be remembered as "A Hero Among Heroes." As Samuel Johnson wrote, "It matters not how a man dies, but how he lives." "A Hero Among Heroes," is the story of how Jimmie Dyess lived and what led this man to accomplish such extraordinary feats of heroism.

Perry Smith dissects the life of his father-in-law to deliver an insightful chronical of the life of an exceptional man. What compelled Jimmie Dyess to risk his life, again and again, first as a college student and then later as a U.S. Marine?

No one could definitively answer that question, but Perry Smith allows us to look deeply into the life of Dyess and provides us with ample clues as to why he behaved so heroically. The qualities he developed in the crucible of the Great Depression growing up in Augusta, Georgia, and the leadership skills he was to hone in military service almost seem to have compelled Dyess to exhibit exceptional gallantry.

Perry Smith vividly tells the story of why Jimmie Dyess was a true hero; a man whose deeds are worthy of being honored and more importantly, being remembered.

An uplifting story of one of America's greatest heroes.
Sadly, America today seems completely bereft of heroes. Perry Smith has undertaken a labor of love to bring to the public eye the story of his father-in-law, Jimmie Dyess, a man he never met. Written primarily for his mother-in-law and his wife, Smith tells the story of a true hero, the only person ever to win both the Carnegie Medal and the Congressional Medal of Honor. Clearly, Jimmie Dyess was a man of honor, courage, and conviction.

In telling the Dyess story, Smith also provides background and history of Andrew Carnegie and the Carnegia Medal. This medal is only awarded to "one, who at the risk of his own life, saves or attempts to save the life of a fellow man. There must be conclusive evidence that the person perfoming the act voluntarily risked his own life to an extraordinary degree in saving or attempting to save the life of another person, or voluntarily scarificed himself in a heroic manner for the benefit of others. The act of rescue must be one in which no direct family relationship or other full measure of responsibility exists between the rescuer and the recued. The act must have been performed in the United States, Canada or the waters thereof and must be brought to the attention of the Commission within two years of the date of the rescue."

Dyess received the Carnegie Medal in 1929 for saving two women on July 13, 1928, who would have surely drowned in the Atlantic ocean. Sixteen years after saving those two women, Dyess's widow, Connor Cleckley Dyess, received the Medal of Honor posthumously for the heroic actions of her husband for his actions in leading fellow Marines in combat in February 1944 during the Roi Namur campaign against well-trained, entrenched Japanese forces.

By telling the Dyess story, Smith also weaves the history of the times. The Depression Years are described, as well as the history of the Marine Corps. Moreover, he also provides a perspective and comparison of the two awards for heroism. The historical value of the book alone is worth the cost of the book.

Should all Americans, both young and old, read this book? Absolutely! It describes the deep-seated values of a man who epitomized courage in the face of danger, honesty, integrity, and natural leadership. Parents would do well to have their children emulate the personal and professional characteristics of Jimmie Dyess. He is a true American hero!

Dance for the Dead
Published in Hardcover by Thomas t Beeler (October, 1996)
Author: Thomas Perry
Average review score:

Dance for the Dead
A no-nonsense, no-frills, and fast-paced read. Jane Whitefield is a native American Houdini on a life mission to save others. Her escapes from danger are clever and provide the reader (or listener) a sort of "how to" on avoiding detection, capture and/or death. This is not the usual who-dunnit or action thriller. The native American thread woven through it is fascinating and Jane is a remarkable and unique heroine. There isn't a dull moment. After listening to the audiobook version, I immediatelly went out and bought the first book featuring Jane: "Vanishing Act." It was equally compelling. If there was a negative about "Dance for the Dead," it was the audiobook reader, Lindsay Crouse. Her monotone reading became, well, monotonous. But the author's story overcame her flat recitation.

Action packed from beginning to end. I LOVED IT!
I picked up this book because the cover caught my attention. I was looking for mystery, excitement, danger with a native american flavor. I could not believe my luck. I read this book in a couple of days on the train, during lunch and late at night. I loved the lead character Jane Whitefield--she's badd!!! I think Jane Whitefield would make an excellent TV series. This was my first Thomas Perry novel and I plan to read Vanishing Act next. This book is a real treasure.

A class act, Perry's Seneca lady, worthy of Hillerman
The first three Jane Whitefield books are the classiest alternative to Tony Hillerman's "Navajo mysteries." Nobody is more fun to read about than Jane Whitefield. She's clever, she's beautiful, she's seriously dangerous to bad guys.

Like that Holmes guy, she's been so popular that Perry tried unsuccessfully to get shet of her for three novels. And maybe she will "rise from the dead" once more. Meantime, there are three good novels (*Vanishing Act,* *Dance for the Dead*, *Shadow Woman*) and two better-than-average-but-kind-of-half-hearted ones (*Face-Changers,* *Blood Money*). In each of the last three books, Jane promises her husband that she will stop now. Perry's done two novels since *Blood Money*, and it looks like Jane's last retirement took. What a shame.

In *Dance for the Dead*, the action begins on page one, and by page five Jane has fought her way through a gauntlet and five or six key people are dead. From this dazzling start, it's a wild ride of switched identities, super-killers, and Jane's mysto/techno woodlore that brings us, breathless, to a celebration on the Seneca rez. On the way we meet a woman we learn to love almost as much as we do Jane.

Wow. Read this book.
